When Imagination Defies Reality
Picasso was once credited to saying that “Everything you can imagine is real”. Well, I myself believe in the concept of creating reality with your thoughts, however, I sure hope some of the creatures from Thomas Mangold’s CGI photographs are not harvested in some lab anytime soon.
Mangold has possibly one of the coolest, and dare I say creatively challenging jobs in the world of photography. I am not judging that other photographers’ works are not creative or challenging; all I am saying is that it takes a lot of imagination to create creatures revolving around a particular concept. Take his latest creation for example, the “elephant mosquito” commissioned by a German business magazine, it is one weird creature that thanks to technology and Mangold’s imagination seems to be a natural inhabitant of our dear planet.
He is a genius in the areas of combining what we perceive as being real with the impossible, and the results are these wonderful creatures, or situations that defies what we consider to be the norm. From an Octopus shaving his tentacles, to an extremely obese giraffe, and anything in between everything is possible in the world of technology. He has been working as a freelancer in the area of CGI photography for nine years now, and let me tell you that this guy as BIG clients all over the globe… I am talking about big names here, and all of them asking him to unwind his imagination and create something out of this world. Mangold, not only creates creatures, but he manages to open up our minds to see things on a different light almost (hence why companies and brands like Audi, Bridgestone, Disney New York, and Clorox just to name a few want to hire this German based artist to make their products really stand out from the rest in the world of Marketing.
So… yea there are other artists doing the same, creating weird creatures and making up fantasy places, but only a few stand out with something interesting and innovative. We are a visual society, and art not always has to be the most aesthetically pleasing, only the most intriguing and controversial.
