Wasted in the Desert with Them Crooked Vultures
Sit down and imagine. Just imagine. Driving down a highway painted in black. The road slicken by faint dribbles of rain. The only source of light coming from the half covered moon hanging in the sky and the spread from your ‘68 Night blue hardtop Caddy Fleetwood headlights. Roaring towards you is a scarlet red ’69 GTO. You think yourself crazy because there is a trail of burning fire from its tires. Is it some illusion slipped beneath your tongue? Inside is a man with dark stone washed jeans and a red hoody with white laces and zipper. His hair reminds you of Elvis but with a touch of articulated madness. He wears a pair of pristine aviators in front of his eyes. They’re colour. Black cherry. He puts a cigarette between his lips and strikes a match on the side of his coarse, short growing beard. The smouldering tip of his cigarette illuminates the interior of the car in a sense of peril and you can see the scar across the corner of one of his lips. The smoke that dances slowly all around him strikes your beating to a still. This is it your heart knows. And right before he sends a bullet to scatter your teeth into your brain you can only hear the sound rushing from his ’69 GTO. The sound of Them Crooked Vultures. Zepplin’s Paul Jones showing you slow building insanity. Nirvana’s David Grohl shooting your heart to a cocaine rhythm and Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme sending you into the mindset that no one else can execute. Them Crooked Vultures is one of the few CD’s that I have willingly purchased and in this download anything free world, I think that’s saying something. This album is incredible from start to finish. It instils you to blaze into fifth gear and beyond in a thirty click school zone if only you weren’t such a pussy. It shows you it’s possible to boil water with the sound. Riffs that set your mind and soul into a dream like inferno. Think of Mexicola, legs spread out along thirteen tracks. It is the only thing a charmingly twisted, slick styled. gunman would listen to. That’s all that needs to be said.
