Travis Coburn- Blast From The Past
If you love the whole Retro theme as much as I do, then you’ll love Tavis Coburn illustrations. His work is a combo of old-fashioned, a bit of glamour, some colorful fun with a touch of modern. The result is simply timeless.
This Toronto based illustrator and graphic designer is one of the most sought after by the big name companies and magazines for the kind of job he does. Needless to say he is amazing at what he does, and his works are phenomenal. His style is unmistakably retro, but he was able to reshape it in a way where all of his illustrations can be easily linked back to his name. Look at the posters he created for this year’s British Academy of Film & Television Awards… he was commissioned to do the posters for the five best picture nominees, and each poster depicts a scene or a character from the movies with his own signature retro vibe that we so much adore. My personal favorites are An Education, and Precious simply because both are instantly recognizable but they still give the impression that they don’t belong to this time.
Inspired by the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, as well as the Russian avant-guarde movement, he graduated from Arts Center College of Design in California where he obtained his BFA in Illustration. Having worked for innumerous advertising, publishing, and music companies around North America and Europe, he is also the holder of many prestigious awards. Also he has admitted to have an adoration for music, and there was a time when he dreamt of becoming a world class DJ; so aside from his obsession with everything from the 40’s to 60’s, he also collects vinyl records.
