Toronto Street Advertising Takeover
Out with the brain-washing, drone-creating media and in with the ART! A group in Toronto takes a step towards making the city a better place by upgrading bland advertisements to hand-made artwork.
Alex M., a student residing in Toronto and one of the hands-on ad-removers gives his insight on ToSAT:
“I think that today we are bombarded way too much with messages that beg us to consume, whether we are at home, at work, or just travelling around our city, there is no escaping advertisement. We are a generation that is learning to define ourselves by what we own or what brand we prefer rather than on our character. I participated in this action to start this conversation, to hopefully make people question this fact, and perhaps move towards something else, where individuality and creativity are celebrated instead of materialism and consumerism”
Some of you, like me, might be questioning the legality of this all. Well! Apparently it’s all golden as the businesses, corporations, and industries that slipped their ads into the blank spaces in the first place were doing it without authorization! Tic for tac? And really, the only ones who might complain (apart from the big guys who are being gipped) are the old foggies who still believe that they can convince the youth that the ways of the past (Sex after marriage! White bread! 9-5er jobs in a cubicle! The nuclear family!) are the only ways to go. So Here Here! to the sneaky art plasterers that are instilling in the minds of our youth to THINK FOR THEMSELVES!
