Hungry For Some Toasted “Assassination Sandwiches”
March 18th, 2010
How many of you can say that you eat art for breakfast? Well I personally don’t consider star shaped pancakes a work of art, but Tibi Tibi Neuspiel sure could hook you up with some of his pretty delicious artistic toasts. Hungry yet? Well you should be!
Ok… so they’re not real toasts, but they sure look oh so good with their fake melted cheese oozing from its sides. The real art here is not about the sculptures made of wax and oil paint that seemed to be pressed with ham and cheese, but about the faces of historical figures they bear on each side. Toronto’s Tibi Tibi Neuspiel has creatively decided to pair famous victims with their assassins in a project titled “Assassination Sandwiches”. Notorious pairs portrayed are Archduke Ferdinand and his assassin Gavrilo Princip, Martin Luther King and James Earl Ray, and JFK and Lee Harvey Oswald to mention a few.
Born in Ottawa he began as self-taught painter before studying painting in Prague. Afterwards he moved to Toronto and worked as an assistant to sculptor Richard Stipl. Now he is able to give you a lesson down history lane about important historic figures, and some cravings for some warm toasted sandwiches filled with melted cheddar and ham. Now that to me is art right there… some pretty impressive portraits that can feed your brain with information. He is very much active, and he has exhibited at Artists Space in NY, The Ottawa Art Gallery, The Art Gallery of Ontario, and Art Basel (including the one at Miami Beach). Ah and make no mistake, for anyone that do portraits of Hitler and places them inside a garbage can is on my good list.
