Standing erect at 1,016 feet, The Shard by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop is London’s next big thing, literally and figuratively.
It almost looks as though London will be time warped to an age where we can transport via space-beam and cars hoover above the ground. Actually, we are looking at what will be only three years from now. Inside this massive building will be office, retail shops, restaurants, a hotel and apartments. Talk about living the high life.
Italian architect Renzo Piano was envisioning a “City in the Sky” when the idea of the Shard surfaced. Besides the shops and housing, there is a 15-storey viewing gallery at the tippity top. To think this all came from a penned-out sketch on the back of a restaurant menu. We have the Eiffel Tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa, our grandchildren’s children will have the Shard.
Construction is set to be complete in 2012.
