David Despau Illustrations 14 540x570 David Despeau and the Popping JujuIt’s got this street alley-brick wall feel to it. Something you’ve sorta seen before but different somehow. In a good way. It’s got this Rock-N-Rolla opening credits juju working for it. Except. With something more urban. Or inner city. I don’t really know what those things mean. Anyway. [ Continue Reading ]

bill sienkiewicz 02 See Retro Visions TodayYou’re sitting on an airplane. Your suit. A creamy brown. The year. Sometime between 1969 and 1975. You swirl a glass of red wine before you take the final savoury sip. “What’s this,” you say. “a 1936?” The gentleman in white corrects you. “37” he says. You nod your head in acknowledgment.  He hands you a card made of gold and salutes you just before the plane hangar opens like the belly of a shark split down the middle. [ Continue Reading ]

hm12 full Cyanide Cigarettes and Slippery SidewalksGritty like the sludge collecting behind a manhole in a city where the sun never seems to break from the grime. Where everything is bleak and the buildings are towers piercing the sky. Dark and twisted with a vibe from the twenties lingering on. There are so many sights that seem like madness melting through the concrete of social sanity. Lazy eyes squinted in cigarette smoke. The corner stone of what a metropolis is on the very inside. This is the maddening world of Bill Sienkiewicz and you should only delve in if you’re not such a sensitive pussy. [ Continue Reading ]

She jumps elegantly; from collaging glamourous pinups, to haunting photos with ominous creatures, to saturating web pages with a feeling of welcome. [ Continue Reading ]

croadcore 392x399 cristy c. road: drawings and shit

When describing Cristy C. Road’s work, my friend said, “…its like she does a lot of speed and draws for days on end. Just of, like, her friends and shit.” And, so, of course, I was hooked. I dove into her famous zine Green’Zine and read both her graphic novels, INDESTRUCTIBLE and BAD HABITS. Then I showed them to all my hardestcore metal comic geek friends… and even they liked her!

TADAOMI SHIBUYA Prince 258x400 Tadaomi Parties Like Its 1999

When I think of pop art, a flutter of brightly colored images and Campbell soup cans flash through my mind.  I guess I have been jaded by the work of Andy Warhol. Tadaomi Shibuya creates his own pop art using distinct geographic shapes and shadowing.

When it comes to having a childhood-story-related complex, Alice in Wonderland syndrome is probably your best option. (For ones that are a bit more problematic look under Peter Pan syndrome, see:Michael Jackson). Afterall, it just means a fascination with all things whimsical, fantastic and slightly macabre. As someone with an Alice fixation, Scottish artist Johanna Basford, does signature black and white illustrations which play with all these elements. Her work is devastatingly detailed and what is most surprising is that it is done the traditional way-by hand, mainly using paint, ink and paper. This fact makes the depth and scope of her work even more impressive.
