There’s nothing in the fall men’s line of bags from Louis Vuitton getting my pulse to flutter or making my shopping sense tingle. The bags are available in all the usual shapes (totes, duffles, etc.), they’re covered in that far too overdone LV logo motif you continue to see everywhere, and for some reason pair brown and black leather in the same visual field. You wouldn’t wear dark brown shoes with a black leather belt, would you? I would hope not.

After pining for summer for so long all I can do is look towards the fall now that it’s here. Ironic, yes. But with such impeccable bits of fashion on the horizon like the Fall/Winter 09 collection from COS who can really blame me?

I’m not your Lynyrd Skynyrd “Simple Man” kind of guy. I like fancy things. So does John Rocha. He likes designing them. I like wearing them. Case in point, his Fall/Winter 09 collection, which is all fur, plaid and exquisiteness in its greatest form. In particular I’m quite taken with his use of high-set, skinny, leather belts on two of the overcoats — Details.

The clothes in Henrik Vibskov’s Fall/Winter 09 collection are a lot like being 17 and drunk and watching a movie you don’t quite get and realizing that Sour Patch Kids and Bacardi 151 should never be mixed. There was a day during my senior year of high school when my friends and I got ridiculously liquored up and cut class to catch whatever was in the theatres. We ended up seeing the adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. The weirdo visuals and strange camera techniques added to the booze left many of us violently ill. I hadn’t thought about that experience in years, not until I saw the latest offerings from Henrik Vibskov.

Men have unpleasant, hairy, lumpy bodies that need to be covered at all times. Presumably the clothes used to cover the monstrosities of the flesh should be more appealing than the prospect of male nudity; the garish, clashing, headache inducing patterns and color choices in Vibskov’s collection barely if at all accomplish that task. I hope the clothes were at least designed from vomit proof material.

Fashion is about clothes. Style is about how one wears their clothes. Fashion is minimally important. Style is everything. Mulberry’s Fall/Winter 09 collection boasts a series of fairly traditional men’s pieces (save for some ridiculously voluminous trousers), no oddly placed zippers, no attention diverting patterns and the like. The clothes here are content to remain in the background and allow the wearer to make the statement rather than the other way around, and that’s the way it should be.

I like the clothes in Antonio Azzuolo’s forthcoming autumn/winter collection nearly as much as I despise the weather they were meant for. Fingerless gloves, muted colors and slim silhouettes (things of which I approve) are gangbusters with Mr.Azzuolo. Listing such disparate influences as George Bernard Shaw and Keith Richards the collection comes together with what I would call a sort of rogue-dandy kind of vibe.

I’m so tired of the winter, sweaters and heavy coats that I can barely be bothered with opening my closet or retrieving clothes from my dry cleaner. With that in mind I am undeniably taken by the fall/winter 09 offerings from Umit Benan, I however can and am quite glad in waiting to wear them.

LA Gear sneakers were in fashion the last time I was into high-tops and I was in high school the last I recall someone sporting a pair of British Walkers; perhaps that’s why I feel so nostalgic looking at the latest collection from PF Flyers. There’s something about the designs in their fall line that reminds of those brands and earlier times in my life. My fashion sense has evolved considerably since the 90s, but I wouldn’t be opposed to throwing on a pair of these and going a little retro for a theme party.
