Ebon Heath not only has an awesome name, but he possesses talent as well. In my eyes, this is a winning combination. At first I misread and thought this name was Ebon Health, and was confused for a good while. But then again, I am easily confused. Above is a piece from stereo.type, his collection of typographic mobiles. His Myspace page reveals a creative spirit and good taste in most things in life. And so, like others who have no idea before him, he’s now my friend.

Ebon is a graphic designer, but do not be fooled by the thumbnails below, for they are not merely fragments comprised of pixels and all of those computer-y things; they are veritable, 3-D, tangible real-life mobiles. Kind of like when you fold a bit of paper and then snip out some corners and VOILA! a snowflake– but much, much cooler.

Chinese painter Xia Xiao Wan draws in 3D. He draws on glass in 3D. For some reason I can’t help but think of the movie The Cell, as I take a gander at his work.

Wan’s exhibit, “Painting from the Inside,” featured the human form drawn on glass. Often, he depicts the body as deformed and creates the illusion that it is floating and suspended in a glass encapsulation. Overall, each piece is stunning and the process itself is quite remarkable.

Wan uses a special pencil and about 13-30 panes of glass for each of his works of art. Drawing on the individual panes, they are later layered to create the three dimensional effect. He must be putting a lot of thought into what goes on every panel in order to achieve the desired end result. I can barely draw a 3D cube on a piece of paper!

A good Halloween costume should be many things: Unique, creative, personal and, what the hell, we’ll give extra points for scary. Canadian 3d artist Eric Testroete hit every criteria when he decided he’d go out as a big-headed version of himself. Anyone who played Nintendo 64 can tell Testorete was inspired by “big head mode” (which, without fail, makes me want to play Goldeneye), but the day I get passed on the street by some dead-eyed pixelated cranial monstrosity? Those, my friends, are the End Times.

You’ve got to give the guy an A for effort; his costume is as cool as it is unsettling. My biggest question, though, is how he can see out of that thing. Maybe he can’t? If so, there’s certainly something to be said for commitment. This might be revealing more about myself than I’d like, but what’s the point of wearing this to a party if you can’t see the horrified looks on your friends’ faces?
