Ronald Kurniawan: Where the Sublime Meets the Contemporary
Ronald Kurniawan graduated with honors from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena California, he currently resides in Los Angeles. Inspired by ideograms, syllables, letterforms, beasts, and heroic landscapes, he creates imagery in which the wilderness and civilization merge. A place where the sublime can coexist with the nuclear age. This juxtaposition of imagery also lends itself to Kurniawan’s creative process, where he uses the simple to express the complex and vice-versa.
Kurniawan finds inspiration in his life experiences, in the types of symbols that you see everywhere in your day-to-day life, which he then shapes into interesting imagery using a natural environment as a backdrop. Taking an idea and breaking it down into an icon; a metaphor for something larger that often depicts a place where the sublime and the contemporary can meet.
(Personally, I’d love to see him design a graphic novel.)
