Maya Hayuk induces acid-like trips, gains fans the world over
October 31st, 2009

Maya Hayuk is a lady. Her work features an array of psychedelic colours and patterns that make the eyeballs bleed, in a good way. But all of this doesn’t matter anyway. She could be a serial killer and she would still be, like, uber kewl.
Like many of the artists that I write about on this blog, Hayuk is not just an anonymous doodler unavailable to the public. Her website features not only her works, but also various blogs for which she writes as well as blogs which she is a fan of. One of the latter is entitled Palin Sucks Shit. There’s nothing written except that. And her own blog is called Palin Totally Sucks Shit. Go see it. There are like, 5 posts or something, and no writing. It’s hilarious. Now you know why I think she’s awesome.
I think that Hayuk is an immensely talented artist, but more importantly, seems like a cool person. It isn’t often that artists put their lives on display (be it in the form of a blog, an autobiography, or even a video journal), and I think that this really allows a given audience to connect with an otherwise anonymous figure. Though her self-titled blog features quite little monologue in favour of photographs of different events (she is an artist, after all…perhaps she prefers the visual to the literary) one catches a glimpse into the person behind the art, and this is what I find fascinating. The artist’s work in itself is like a display of thoughts and emotion for all to see, but often those thoughts and emotions are left to the viewer’s interpretation. By including links to friends, artists, and galleries, Hayuk’s site allows the world a glimpse into the realm of who Maya really is. Some would perhaps argue that this renders her work base, as considering the artist’s perspective closes all doors to further interpretation, but I quite enjoy getting to know about different people and how they think. But hey, I’m a stalker, after all ;)
I just wanted to put that out there. I wanted to be all sarcastic and funny but then I accidentally started being nice :/ Sorry…it doesn’t happen very often. I think it’s to counteract the totally shitty mood I was in the other day. I feel like the Grinch..my heart grew three sizes today! Maybe it’s because IT’S FINALLY NICE OUTSIDE! TIME TO GO PLAY IN THE SPRINKLERS WITH MY FLOATERS…PARTAY!
