Levitate Me
May 13th, 2009

Photographer Julia Fullerton-Batten must be the elevator lady The Pixies were talking about in that song. Her series of photographs entitled In Between, snapshot young women afloat shadows and breezes. Capturing their levitation required the models to perform their capoeira acrobatics at least 20 times each.
In Between picks up Julia’s photographic narration of the seven ages of a woman’s life where her previous series Teenage Stories left off, and features the young women “suspended in a state of confusion during this time of transition from pubescence to womanhood.” The preceding Teenage Stories features teen girls dwarfing their surroundings, a symbol of the magnitude of those years. ”I dont think people ever get over some things that happen at that time, when you are quite sensitive and feel vulnerable,” she says. I know I haven’t.
Sans expressive faces and professional posing her photographs are still able to pierce in a way that a smiling portrait seldomly, if ever, can.
