Varial Studio

OK, so I’ve never been one to be afraid of clowns, but I have to admit that when I first saw Varial’s, a Canadian Studio, clown photographs it made me step back a bit!  The image seems to pop right out of the page and if you aren’t expecting it, it almost frightens you for a second.  Or, perhaps, I’m just a scaredy cat!  Varial Studio

Varial, a photography and visual art studio, as a personal project, has taken on the interesting task of creating sometimes creepy, yet alluring Tim Burton-esque inspired clowns.  Using digital illustration, Varial has taken its subjects and molded them  to look like clowns using a number of different digital makeup techniques.  Following along these same lines are photographers/manipulationists (a new word by me!) Blutsbruder, Jill Greenberg, and Janko Williams, to name a few.

A side note:

As I was looking through the many talented photographers that Varial employed, I couldn’t help but notice one in-particular that caught my attention.  Alexandre Ubeda (Website) is fitted for being listed under Talent as Varial categorizes its photographers.  His work, whether black and white or in gritty color, moves you emotionally and with its allusions to another world.
