Hospital Food Like You’ve Never Imagined
December 2nd, 2009

Latvian restaurant Hospitalis is making people sick, and it’s not what you think.
Inspired by a recent trip to the ER, which, by the way, was terrible ( the song “They Don’t Care About Us” ran through my mind like a broad on a treadmill – the lyrics about being invisible and being ignored really stand out.) I decided to write about this pop restaurant that I heard about a little while ago. Nestled in the youthful capital of Riga, Latvia, Hospitalis offers the usuals of dinner and lunch fare with a slight twist. Everything from the tables where you sit, to the waitresses who take your order, to the bowl your soup, or whatever that is, comes in, is rooted in the restaurants overarching hospital theme. Get it? Hospitalis. Clever, no? OK, it’s maybe not the most creative name, but it certainly gets straight to the point. ( see needle) Guests are referred to as patients, meals are “stylized” in the “operating room” and a hospital menu is provided for you to chose your hearts desire. Hmmm… The last time I had hospital food it wasn’t a pleasant experience, and it probably added to whatever the hell was wrong with me at the time, but judging from the reviews of the service and menu, I may just have to consider repealing my personal ban on anything where “patients” congregate.
