Earth Hour in Reverse
My guess is that Honda, which put together this technically dazzling piece, has never heard the name of John A. Lomax. And you probably haven’t either. In truth, neither had I before I started researching this ad. But 70 years ago, Lomax and his wife traveled to penitentaries throughout the South, recording traditional songs that probably would have died out otherwise.Decades after it was first recorded by Lomax, “This Little Light of Mine” was made into a Civil Rights anthem, and now it’s being appropriated into a bouncy little number to sell hybrid cars. So rather than paying a licensing fee to feather the nest of millionaire rock stars (Led Zeppelin and Cadillac, anyone?), Honda paid a handful of tech people to design the shot, and hundreds of other people a few bucks to flash their lights in unison. Not such a bad tradeoff.
This post is the first time (and perhaps the last) that I let my inner history geek come out. But at least we all learned something, right?
