Spencer Murphy

It used to be that part of the art of good photography was to capture a moving object and make it appear so steady that it appeared to be a still life. You wanted the effect of someone yelling FREEZE right before your shot. Well, UK photographer Spencer Murphy is throwing that convention out the window and instead choosing to illuminate the beauty of what an object in motion actually looks like as it travels through space. It may not be clean cut or always clear, but there’s something raw and stark in how real it looks. Plus, it’s amazing to see how the camera picks up on energy- creating a trail of light that makes the object appear fantastical and heavenly.

I absolutely love this concept! It really accentuates the intricacies and the power behind the maneuvers.I’m actually a huge fan of a National Film Board of Canada film by Norman McLaren called Pas de Deux (1968). It’s all black and white but it shows the trajectory of movement in much the same way. Check it out at http://www.nfb.ca/film/pas_de_deux_en/
