Die Antwoord – Evil Boy
We mentioned Die Antwoord here before, all due to their uniqueness in sound, lyrics and music videos. Well with the video Evil Boy they took it a up a notch or ten.
Zulu, a young South African emcee shares a verse in the video with Ninja and Yo Landi. His verse is in Afrikaans and is translated into english, however without proper background knowledge of what the song is about it is very easy to find his lyrics uncomfortably homophobic. The story behind the song is about a young kid who is being forced into a form of ritual circumcision by his community. As absurd as it sounds, it gets much worse as I dive into some detail.
Apparently this ritual is performed by sending the boy naked into what they call “the bushes” and I am assuming a forest, for a week. All the kid is given is a blanket and a knife. The boy is to perform the circumcision on him self with the knife he is given. Once the circumcision is complete he is required to put hot ash from a fire on his face and his penis, this is supposed to help stop the bleeding. As bizarre as this might sound in some South African communities this is the only way you can become a man. Many young boys die, some do more damage than good, pretty grimy. This song is the rebellion against this ritual. Zulu’s verse talks about how he does not want to confirm to their rules and if he can’t become a man, then he’ll be an Evil Boy for life.
Hope that makes sense, enjoy the video…
