Coney Island Mermaid Parade!
This Saturday (June 19) mermaids and mermen will grace Coney Island, Brooklyn by float in the Mermaid Parade. Lou Reed (from The Velvet Underground) is this year’s Mermaid Parade King Neptune. High chance of him being shirtless. You HAVE to go!!
And Laurie Anderson (Reed’s wife & accomplished performance artist) will be the lovely Queen Mermaid. Coney Island USA founded the parade in 1983 and is now the nation’s largest art parade. According to Coney Island’s Mermaid FAQ, “The Mermaid Parade celebrates the sand, the sea, the salt air and the beginning of summer, as well as the history and mythology of Coney Island, Coney Island pride, and artistic self-expression. The Parade is characterized by participants dressed in hand-made costumes as Mermaids, Neptunes, various sea creatures, the occasional wandering lighthouse, Coney Island post card or amusement ride, as well as antique cars, marching bands, drill teams, and the odd yacht pulled on flatbed.”
Bringing the whole damn fam is not discouraged, but there will be several scantily-clad dressed mermaids and mermen walking around. After the parade, the king and queen will participate in the helping with the official opening of the ocean for the 2010 summer swimming season.
I’ll be attending, so look for me! And buy me a beer. Hope to see all your pretty faces there!
