Circus du Maleonn
I remember going to the circus. Although sometimes a frightening experience (I am deathly afraid of clowns to which I blame Stephen King’s It), I managed to sit through the entirety of each show, eyes wide and munching quietly on buttery goodness. Maleonn has extracted some of the nightmarish qualities of the circus and implanted them beautifully on a picture.
Maleonn’s Chinese Circus titter on the edge of happy and spine-chilling. Between scissor-holding clowns and gas-masked jokers, this is not your typical all smiles Ringling Bros. tent performance.
“Although life is a circus, we still have to play it vividly,” says Maleonn, who both lives and works in Shanghai, China. Most of his work has a fable-like and imaginative quality. However, he does not steer far away realistic attributions, creating focus on the idea that life can be a mixture of both.
