 Detailed Art Johanna Basford

When it comes to having a childhood-story-related complex, Alice in Wonderland syndrome is probably your best option. (For ones that are a bit more problematic look under Peter Pan syndrome, see:Michael Jackson). Afterall, it just means a fascination with all things whimsical, fantastic and slightly macabre. As someone with an Alice fixation, Scottish artist Johanna Basford, does signature black and white illustrations which play with all these elements. Her work is devastatingly detailed and what is most surprising is that it is done the traditional way-by hand, mainly using paint, ink and paper. This fact makes the depth and scope of her work even more impressive. The longest running cartoon. Ever. That says it all. It’s  an impressive achievement for a show whose creator had admittedly “failed” at everything else. Now, as part of the culture as the characters they feature/parody, this show is competing with Law and Order for longevity. As Animation Guide, an online animation resource site, says:  ”The Simpsons first appeared in 1987 as a series of 30-second shorts produced by Matt  Groening for the FOX series “The Tracey Ullman Show.” The first of these shorts aired on April 19, 1987, during the third week of primetime broadcasts on FOX. Soon they had their own series, premiering on FOX as a half-hour Christmas special on Dec. 17, 1989 (20 years ago today), and then as a regular series on Jan. 14, 1990.” [ Continue Reading ]

Moleskine, makers of the notebook preferred by writers (and posers like me) everywhere, held a group exhibition entitled “Detour.” An artist named Nendo created the notebook above, which stands out from much of the rest of the crowd because it’s not simply a drawing. I included a couple of other examples in the gallery below so that you can judge for yourself. [ Continue Reading ]

Latvian restaurant Hospitalis is making people sick, and it’s not what you think.

Inspired by a recent trip to the ER, which, by the way, was terrible ( the song “They Don’t Care About Us” ran through my mind like a broad on a treadmill – the lyrics about being invisible and being ignored really stand out.) I decided to write about this pop restaurant that I heard about a little while ago. Nestled in the youthful capital of Riga, Latvia, Hospitalis offers [ Continue Reading ]
