Photographer Brooke Nipar grew up in sunny Cali, under rock-star parents before relocating to the concrete jungle of New York City. Desert raver turned city girl, she has an extensive and distinctive portfolio of photographs – most of which, though, left me with “what” rather than “wow,” at least until recently. More recent photos for MissBehave magazine showed off an eye for colour that was neglected in earlier work. With this extra level of eye-pop, she’s finally turning out some eye-candy.Her style is very edgy, raw, and rock-and-roll. Her photos occasionally beg for some extra retouching, and they had a tendency to leave the eye wandering a little in the past. She does a lot of fashion and model work on very basic backgrounds; white wall, motel room, cityscape, swimming pool. Somehow, she always manages to come up with something a little rough, and a little retro. Recently, she’s taken advantage of the trend toward eye-catching, bold colour combinations, and it’s done her work a world of good.
Aside from having shot a bunch of household-name celebrities, including Amy Winehouse and Busta Rhymes, Nipar’s got a huge selection of photos for magazines like Nylon, Nylon Japan, Foam, and MissBehave in a variety of styles. Personally, I prefer her more commercial photos to her more freestyle ones, and her magazine work is some of her best. She also has an interesting photo diary, which has a lot of photos that didn’t even make it to her portfolios, and which may actually top the ones that did. It’s definitely worth a glance!
