Behind The Pane

Chinese painter Xia Xiao Wan draws in 3D. He draws on glass in 3D. For some reason I can’t help but think of the movie The Cell, as I take a gander at his work.
Wan’s exhibit, “Painting from the Inside,” featured the human form drawn on glass. Often, he depicts the body as deformed and creates the illusion that it is floating and suspended in a glass encapsulation. Overall, each piece is stunning and the process itself is quite remarkable.
Wan uses a special pencil and about 13-30 panes of glass for each of his works of art. Drawing on the individual panes, they are later layered to create the three dimensional effect. He must be putting a lot of thought into what goes on every panel in order to achieve the desired end result. I can barely draw a 3D cube on a piece of paper!
