Description
My name is Melissa. I grew up in Newfoundland, a little island off the east coast of Canada, and relocated to Montreal a few years back. I am part writer, part circus performer, part social worker, part musician, part dancer, part world traveler and, yes, part blogger. My favorite colour is gray, I'm vegetarian, and I drink coffee like only a true addict can. All of these parts come, mostly harmoniously, together, to form me. I hope you enjoy my posts.

I am, admittedly, a huge summer reader. Since I was little, I can remember passing entire summer days curled up in an armchair, rain hitting the windows, or sprawled in the grass, brushing ants from my legs, or shielding my eyes from the sun with my novel, splayed on a towel in my bikini… either way, summer reads have always played a big part of my vacation months.

This summer, I’ve already clawed my way through a number of books – or not even managed to – and these are the early summer reviews.

You know when you go to a gallery, and you see a large, beautiful, eye-catching piece of work with an even more large, beautiful, and eye-catching price tag, and you look back and forth, spellbound between the two, and you think, that’s beautiful, but I could do that no problem? Welcome to the world of Sarah Splitler.

For various reasons, cultures, landscapes, and species on our planet are quickly disappearing. This is no secret. “Preservation,” “conservation,” “endangered,” and “extinct” are words in our daily vocabularies. Many of us dream of learning about or experiencing the world’s endangered phenomenon before their secrets are lost forever, preserving now what still exists before all hope is gone.

My first thought when I got a look at Conway’s work was, “oh, god. Here is clearly a man who loved video games, Manga, and/or Dungeons and Dragons as a teenager, and never really got over it. Now he’s an artist, what is the world coming to?”

Upon closer examination, I still partially hold to my initial reaction. That said, Daniel Conway (aka Arcipello) does have some pieces that make interesting and unique statements. Much of his work is quite detailed and emotionally-driven. And while some of his work remains in the cliché world of a man who never truly got over his teenaged obsessions, a small portion of it is still worth a review.

The UK’s Holly Jazz Lowe says that one of her favorite things to do is combining wonky musical genres. It makes her band, Like A Thief, a little hard to describe. She is at once pop artist, singer/songwriter, indie rocker – whatever label you put on her, she just released a new single on MySpace, just in time for summer: Forecast for Snow.
