Based in Montreal, but beloved around the world. I write, I play guitar, I write songs, and I bring joy to the hearts of children and coffee to their parents. On a more serious note, I am a 24 year old musician and journalism student. My day gig (other than my studies) is a barista at Starbucks, but hey, we all gotta pay the bills, right?

S1 585x389 Stevie Wonder Free Montreal Show, June 30 2009

When Montreal celebrates, we do it in style. Our team wins the Stanley Cup? We hold a parade (and yes, a riot) that no city can match. Host the Olympics? We build a monstrosity of a stadium with a price tag of over a billion dollars. Have the 30th edition of our International Jazz Festival? Well, we decide, rain or shine, to throw a party for half a million people, with the legendary Stevie Wonder providing the entertainment.

9 Questions with… The Catalyst

l a1b036141e0c423ea9a18fd83d3600e1 329x400 9 Questions with... The Catalyst

I’m used to feeling quite safe whenever Matt Bailie is around. As one of the doormen at well known Montreal watering hole MadHatters (slogan: The Best Dive in Town!), Matt is charged with protecting drunken morons (i.e. me) from themselves and other equally inebriated patrons. So when I first heard his band The Catalyst, I was a bit shocked.  You can’t help the uneasy, ominous feeling that develops in your gut as a result of their ultra heavy sound. Drums pound with an almost inhuman ferocity, while discordant guitars chug out machine gun rhythms and virtuoso-level leads. All this is topped with Bailie’s tortured howls and (let’s face it) downright scary grunts. Proving that our music scene is more than pansy-asses with tight jeans, bad haircuts and limp wrists, The Catalyst brings the metal like few others, combining the intricacy and melody of early Metallica and Pantera with the death metal vocals and breakdowns of New Wave of American Heavy Metal bands like Lamb of God. But enough from me. Here’s bassist Mike Marino, telling you what the metalheads of artisticthings.com need to know. [ Continue Reading ]

ada 452x400 Alright artisticthings fans, lets get interactive

Every day, I come on this site, and there’s always something cool to check out. All of you people out in internet-land are getting the low down on everything cool in the visual arts, music, film, technology… everything under the cyber sun. Still, there is something that’s been bugging me in the back of my mind for the past couple of weeks. Two things, actually. First of all, and it’s unsurprising on a website that prides itself on visual content, is the short shrift given to literary works. There’s pieces here and there, but writers have definitely been given the short end of the stick. Secondly; when I came aboard, I mentioned in my introduction piece that it would be my goal to get to know our writers and readers. To an extent, this is happening. But I’d like to speed up the process.

maxim 298x400 In which AdamK ventures out of his cave and goes to Llama Inks exhibitionThis past Saturday night, I found myself at beloved Montreal bar Le Social taking in the rarest of cultural events: hip-hop concert/art sale. The party was organized by llama Ink, a collective of local artists whose stated mission is to put art back in the hands of youth, who for years have been pushed out of being able to buy and collect original artwork due to its prohibitive cost. When I spoke to an organizer who introduced himself as Peter, he told me that Llama Ink also acts as a way for artists to be able to express themselves without having to compromise. “We’re trying to take the ‘starving’ out of ‘starving’ artist.” [ Continue Reading ]

So now we know that Jacob does in fact exist, and until now, Ben had never met him.

We know how Dr. Chang lost his arm.

We know that dead really is dead. I’m gonna miss Locke, though I think he may be back. He deserves a better ending than being strangled to death off the island by a shmuck like Ben.

And most importantly, you now know how much of a total dork I am.
