Alexis Marcou- Less is More
For designer and illustrator Alexis Marcou, less is definitely translated into more. Marcou’s works are filled with life, however, it is all accomplished by recreating an 80’s minimalist retro look with a contemporary twist.
Once I looked at his sketches, it brought me a bit of nostalgia towards those great 80’s cartoons I watched as a kid, and the cool comic books I used to “borrow” from my cousin’s collection. Then again, don’t be fooled by his cartoonish ways, because his works can be equally sexy and sophisticated to the eyes.
Marcou tends to incorporate in his designs his hand drawn sketches, to use minimum coloring (watercolors), and to add a dash of technology as perhaps a form of appreciation for the 21st century. The result is no doubt a very striking unique style that has become a personal trademark. You know one of those odd artistic conceptual MTV ads we see on the channel (or used to)? Well, he even managed to create a nature themed MTV sample ad without departing from his unpretentious retro trademark.
This 26 year old British artist has worked in Media and Marketing companies, and is now trying his luck working as a freelance designer (having designed conceptual posters, or animations for big names such as Adidas) in Larissa, Greece where he now resides. If you would like to support… it is not hard to find some of the copies of his private self initiated project “Panda” selling online. I am sure he will continue to do well though, for according to his portfolio 2009 was a good year for this lad.
